Birding in Dubai … really?
Yes, a Birding Big Day in the Heart of the City
Earlier this year, I found myself in the UAE for business, and as any seasoned bird nerd would understand, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to squeeze in a Birding Big Day (BBD). There’s nothing quite as thrilling for me as spotting new birds (lifers) to add to my growing list. And while >560 species globally might be small fry for the hardcore twitchers out there, for me, it’s a number I’m pretty proud of.
Birding became a passion of mine back when we lived in southern Africa. Hours spent at waterholes watching for the “big game” often led to some unexpected surprises—brilliant flashes of color, curious calls, and quirky behaviors of birds I couldn’t name at the time. That curiosity led me to bird books, and since then, I’ve collected field guides from the UK, Europe, Italy, India, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand.
I carry binoculars whenever I travel, and wherever possible, I carve out a day in nature—even if it’s wedged between business meetings. There’s something incredibly rewarding about finding something new, something wild, in a place you least expect it.
Which brings me back to Dubai. Jack, knowing my love for birds, decided to treat me to a proper BBD. Now, birding probably isn’t the first thing most people associate with Dubai—but let me tell you, it was magic.
Right in what feels like the heart of the city lies a beautiful lake with three bird hides. One was bustling with activity, one was under repair, but the third hide? That one was a gem. Quiet, peaceful, and teeming with life. We were stunned by the variety and number of species—and to my delight, I spotted 11 lifers! What an absolute bonus.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect: migration season. The air was alive with movement, sound, and color. It was a reminder that even in the most urban of landscapes, nature finds a way—and if you’re paying attention, it will reward you.
I’m still learning the calls (thank goodness for the Birdle app, my daily dose of birding brain-teasers), but I’m here for the journey as much as the list. And that day in Dubai? Total bliss.
So here’s my takeaway: if you want to do something special for someone, find out what really lights them up. Then go share it with them. In this fast-paced world, time together is rare—and those shared adventures are the memories that truly stick.
So go on—grab someone you care about, find your version of a birding hide in the middle of the city, and live life with a little more adventure. And if you do, tag us—I’d love to see where your wild takes you.
